Scholarify ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and share information when you use our Chrome extension.
1. Information We Collect
A. Website Content
When you use Scholarify on Wikipedia, our extension temporarily accesses and extracts specific content from the page you are visiting, specifically:
- The article title (Topic).
- The list of references (citations, URLs, and DOIs) found on the page.
B. Usage Data
We collect anonymous usage data related to your interaction with the extension, such as:
- Button clicks (e.g., "Rank by AI," "Check for PDF").
- Status of PDF availability searches.
C. Payment Status
We use a third-party service, ExtensionPay, to manage subscriptions. We do not collect or store your financial information (such as credit card numbers). We only store a unique user identifier and your subscription status (e.g., Free vs. Premium) locally on your browser.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information for the following purposes:
- To Provide Core Features: extracting references to generate citations (BibTeX, CSV) and finding source links.
- To Locate PDFs: If you use the "Check for PDF" feature, we use the article's DOI (Digital Object Identifier) to search for open-access versions.
- To Rank References: If you use the "Rank by AI" feature, we process the reference list to determine relevance to the article topic.
- To Manage Accounts: To verify your premium status and unlock paid features.
3. Third-Party Services and Data Sharing
We share specific data with third-party service providers solely to enable the extension's functionality. We do not sell your data.
A. Anthropic (AI Processing)
- Feature: "Rank by AI Relevance."
- Data Shared: The Wikipedia page title and the text of the references found on the page.
- Purpose: To analyze and rank sources based on academic relevance.
- Privacy: Data sent to Anthropic is subject to their API data usage policies.
B. Unpaywall (Our Research)
- Feature: "Check for PDF."
- Data Shared: The DOI of the reference you are checking.
- Purpose: To query the Unpaywall database for free, legal PDF links.
C. ExtensionPay
- Feature: Subscription Management.
- Data Shared: Your installation ID.
- Purpose: To process payments and validate your license. All financial transactions are handled securely by Stripe (via ExtensionPay) external to the extension.
D. Cloudflare Workers
- Feature: Backend Infrastructure.
- Purpose: We use Cloudflare Workers to securely route your requests to our AI processing services. Your IP address may be processed briefly by Cloudflare for security and routing purposes.
4. Data Retention
- Page Content: Wikipedia data scraped by the extension is processed in real-time and is not permanently stored on our servers. It is discarded immediately after the requested action (e.g., ranking or exporting) is complete.
- Local Storage: Your settings and subscription token are stored locally in your browser's storage.
5. Your Consent
By installing Scholarify and using its features, you consent to the processing of data as described in this policy.
- AI Ranking: Data is only sent to our AI provider when you explicitly click the "Rank by AI" button.
- PDF Search: Data is only sent to Unpaywall when you explicitly click the "Check for PDF" button.
